United Shield certifies the APL-RF1-100 to NIJ 0101.06 as a Level III stand-alone plate. The plus refers to multi-strike protection against three special threat rounds listed on the datasheet:
- 7.62 x 39mm 123gr PS ball (mild steel core)
- 7.62 x 51mm 149gr FMJ (M80)
- 5.56 x 45mm 55gr ball (M193)
Construction and cut
The plate uses a regular multi-curve shape with a shooters cut, which trims the upper corners for rifle-stock clearance. At 10 x 12 in it weighs 3.3 lb and is 1.04 in thick. The standard finish is a black polyurea wrap, and the plate is manufactured in accordance with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 quality standards.
Fitting it to a carrier
Because the plate is stand-alone, it does not need a soft armor backer behind it to meet its rating. That suits plate carriers worn without soft armor inserts, provided the plate pockets take a 10 x 12 in shooters cut plate 1.04 in thick.
