    Rigaku CQL Narc-ID vs Gen-ID vs Max-ID

    • Narc-IDPresumptive narcotics screening: narcotics, precursors and cutting agents.
    • Gen-IDGeneral chemical threats: narcotics, explosives, household chemicals, precursors, and more.
    • Max-IDThe largest library, adding chemical warfare agents and toxic industrial chemicals.

All three Rigaku CQL models share one body: 18.5 cm x 15 cm x 7.9 cm, 1.7 kg (3.7 lbs), rated IP-68 & MIL810G, with 1064 nm Raman laser excitation to reduce fluorescence interference. What changes is the laser power, the library and the scan modes.

    FAQ

    Comparing the CQL models: questions

What is the difference between the CQL Narc-ID, Gen-ID and Max-ID?
All three share the same chassis and detector: 18.5 cm x 15 cm x 7.9 cm, 1.7 kg (3.7 lbs), TE Cooled InGaAs - 512 pixel. What changes is the laser power, the library and the scan modes. The CQL Narc-ID runs a 1064 nm / 350mW laser, a 1200+ item narcotics-focused library and a single ChemGuard™ (screener) mode. The CQL Gen-ID runs 1064 nm / 490mW, a 5100+ item library and two scan modes (Identification, ThreatAlert™). The CQL Max-ID runs 1064 nm / 490mW, a library of over 13,000 items and three scan modes (Identification, ThreatAlert™, ChemGuard™).
Which CQL model identifies chemical warfare agents?
The CQL Max-ID. It is the only one of the three whose included libraries list CWA, CWA Precursor and TIC/TIM. The Gen-ID's included libraries do not include chemical warfare agent (CWA) or toxic industrial chemical (TIC) libraries. The Narc-ID's six included libraries are Cutting Agent, Narcotic, Narcotic Precursor, Pharmaceutical, Solvent and Steroid, with no explosive, CWA or TIC libraries.
    Which models identify explosives?
The Gen-ID (Explosive, Explosive Precursor libraries) and the Max-ID (Explosive, Explosives Precursor libraries). The Narc-ID's included libraries do not include explosives.
Can any of them detect trace amounts?
Handheld Raman systems are not trace identification tools. Each CQL model identifies bulk and trace levels of substances only with the optional QuickDetect™ trace colorimetric detection, which Rigaku describes as automated colorimetrics for non-visible detection. On the Narc-ID it is listed as Optional - Narcotics Only; on the Gen-ID and Max-ID as Optional (Narcotics & Explosives).
    Can they scan through packaging?
Yes. Rigaku says all three can identify unknown substances through packaging, which keeps the user safe from exposure to a harmful chemical. Rigaku states that the Narc-ID can scan colored, mixed, or dirty substances, even through colored packaging, and that the Max-ID can identify colored substances or scan through colored packaging. 1064 nm Raman laser excitation reduces fluorescence interference on all three. The adjustable nose cone (0mm -5.5mm), which allows for scanning through different thickness and types of packaging, is included on the Gen-ID and Max-ID and optional on the Narc-ID.
Is a CQL Narc-ID result confirmatory?
No. Rigaku describes the CQL Narc-ID as a tool for presumptive identification and screening. Rigaku notes that SWGDRUG recognizes Raman spectroscopy as a Category A technique and that at least one other technique shall be used to support the identification; the optional QuickDetect Mode is a Category C technique that provides that second method.
Can we add our own materials to the library?
Yes, on all three. Each can add materials to the user library and create custom applications. The Gen-ID supports up to 4 user library categories and the Max-ID up to 8.
Do they use the same battery?
All three run on a 7.2 V Li-ion, 3400mAH battery rated >5 hours. The Gen-ID and Max-ID also have an optional CR123a (qty: 6) configuration.
    Is fleet management software included?
All three are compatible with Rigaku's CommandSuite™ Fleet Management software, which is included on units #1 - #2 and available for purchase for higher quantities.
    Are they export-controlled?
Rigaku states each CQL model is not ITAR-restricted, though a U.S. Department of Commerce export license may be required for some countries. All products manufactured by Rigaku Analytical Devices are made in the USA.
Where does the Rigaku Icon-X fit?
Rigaku describes the Icon-X as its fourth generation 1064 nm handheld Raman. Featuring a more ergonomic form factor, the Icon-X joins the award winning 1064 nm fleet of the Rigaku CQL platform. See the Icon-X card above for a link to its page.
