    908 Devices ThreatID

Identify solids, liquids, gas/vapors, and complex mixtures in real-time

ThreatID gives emergency and military responders the ability to accurately identify a vast range of chemical threats with a single, portable, battery-operated system. The platform is built on FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) and covers two measurement modes: a diamond ATR for powders and liquids, and a multi-pass gas cell for gas/vapors.

    Field note

After the fire: batteries that kept off-gassing

An agency was contracted to decommission numerous types of batteries, including Li-ion cells and other electrical components, that had been damaged in a large-scale fire event. ThreatID's gas-phase FTIR identified the headspace gases.

    1. The hazard in the "safe" step

Immersing Li-ion batteries in brine is meant to de-energize the cells so they can be transported and discarded safely. The process is not trivial for remediation personnel: it liberates numerous gases that are highly toxic and flammable.

    2. Sampling the headspace

Batteries were soaked in 55-gallon drums and smaller containers, and gaseous samples were extracted from the headspaces using Tedlar bags. A certified instructor was on-site to conduct the measurements and report results back to technical experts.

    3. What ThreatID identified

From the headspace sampling, ThreatID primarily identified methane and ammonia. Reachback personnel confirmed the results and, through detailed spectral data review, identified some very minute components: acetylene, formaldehyde, ethene, and some unidentifiable substances.

    4. Confirmed, and unexpected

Colorimetric tubes on-site detected methane, ammonia and formaldehyde, confirming the gas-phase results. The presence of ammonia and VOCs was not expected from initial supposition and readings from basic air monitors.

    5. The takeaway

Inactive batteries may still pose significant hazards after a fire and must be properly monitored. The brine method must be further optimized, and without FTIR gas identification the clean-up would have been plagued with uncertainties and required significantly more time.
