One handheld, two analytical technologies and the algorithm that ties them together. VipIR collects two separate spectra from the exact same sample, without re-positioning it or taking an additional sample, and Smart Spectral Processing uses the results from one technique to refine, challenge, or confirm the interpretation of the other. You read one identification, not two.
VipIR runs FTIR and Raman on one sample and lets Smart Spectral Processing (SSP), a proprietary algorithm, check one against the other before it reports. 908 Devices says this interaction enhances the accuracy and reliability of chemical identification from a single sample.

Solids or liquids go onto the single sampling interface. Nothing is moved between techniques and no additional sample is taken.

VipIR collects an FTIR and a Raman spectrum from the exact same sample. SSP actively integrates the two data sets, using the results from one to refine, challenge, or confirm the interpretation of the other.

SmartID uses SSP to provide a singular, confidence-based result. Check marks indicate the result was confirmed by both Raman and FTIR.
“The result is a single, high-confidence identification of unknown solids, or liquids, including toxic industrial chemicals, narcotics, explosives, and everyday chemicals.”908 Devices
908 Devices calls VipIR a 3-in-1 device with FTIR, Raman, and SSP, and is clear that it is more than two instruments in one case: it “amplifies their capabilities” for unknown substance identification. Here is what each part brings.
The first of the two analytical technologies in VipIR's singular workflow.
The second technology, collected from the same sample. Raman sampling also includes the flexible, integrated Raman probe for non-invasive identification through containers, and an integrated vial holder for standard vials.
A proprietary algorithm that actively integrates Raman and FTIR spectral data. It uses the results from one to refine, challenge, or confirm the interpretation of the other.
A simplified workflow eliminates the guesswork in unknown chemical identification: FTIR, Raman, and SSP analysis to refine and confirm results.
VipIR was built with flexibility in mind. Experienced hazmat technicians can also select which technology to employ as needed.
Sample types are solids/liquids, containers with the Raman probe, and vials. The flexible Raman probe and integrated vial holder are there for versatile sampling options, alongside SERS support for low-concentration work.
Smart Spectral Processing through a single sampling interface: both spectra from one placement.
For non-invasive identification through containers.
For easy analysis within standard vials.
Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) for low concentrations (such as synthetic opioids/fentanyl).
An extensive library of drugs, TICs/TIMs, consumer products, chemical warfare agents and explosives, the same library behind both missions further down this page.
Sophisticated mixture analysis which can report all observable components in a mixture.
The hardware and every specification are the same for both audiences; what changes is the job and the threats in front of it.

For hazmat teams facing an unknown, VipIR offers a dramatic improvement in unknown substance identification and accelerates decision-making on scene.

For customs and border agents, VipIR accelerates decision-making at ports of entry, during inspections and high-stakes interdiction efforts.
