  • FLIR K-Series · Thermal imaging cameras for firefighters

FLIR K2 vs K33 vs K85-NThermal imaging cameras compared

The short answer: the K2 is the compact personal TIC for putting thermal imaging on every firefighter; the K33 steps up to 240 × 180 with FSX® and a 60 Hz refresh rate; the K85-N brings 640 × 480 single-range imaging and the FLIR Responder App, and FLIR lists it as fully certified to NFPA 1930:2025.

All three are FLIR K-Series thermal imaging cameras built for firefighting: IP67 and rated for a 2 m drop onto concrete. They differ in resolution, thermal sensitivity, temperature range, image modes, recording and connectivity. Compare them side by side below.

    Personal TIC

    FLIR K2

For putting a thermal camera on every member of the crew. FLIR calls the K2 affordable enough to have a Situational Awareness TIC for each rear seat, and compact and lightweight enough to carry anywhere or attach to your gear.

    1. 160 × 120 with MSX®MSX® image enhancement adds edge detail to scenes, helping firefighters identify structures and surroundings.
    2. Seven imaging modesSet the camera to one of seven imaging modes depending upon primary use, using free, downloadable FLIR Tools® software.
    3. 1.54 lbs (0.7 kg) with batteryAttaches easily to turnouts, with simplified, single-button controls that can be used with heavy gloves.

    More resolution, many hands

    FLIR K33

For crews that want more resolution while keeping cameras in many hands. FLIR built the K33 to be affordable enough for fire crews to have multiple TICs in use at a fire scene.

    1. 240 × 180 at <40 mK with FSX®FSX® Flexible Scene Enhancement intensifies the structural and textural details in the thermal image.
    2. 60 Hz refresh, 4 in LCDA rapid refresh rate for better on-scene orientation, on a bright, easy-to-see 4" display.
    3. One button, one triggerOne glove-friendly button starts the K33 in TI-Basic mode; pulling and holding the trigger freezes the image.

    Pixels, range and heat

The three numbers buyers ask about most: how many thermal pixels each camera has, which object temperatures it can measure, and how long the camera itself is rated to work in high heat.

    FAQ

    Comparing the K-Series

What is the main difference between the FLIR K2, K33 and K85-N?
Resolution and what the camera does beyond showing a thermal image. IR resolution is 160 × 120 on the K2, 240 × 180 on the K33 and 640 × 480 on the K85-N. Thermal sensitivity is <100 mK, <40 mK and <60 mK, and the field of view 47° × 35°, 51° × 38° and 53° × 40°. Only the K85-N stores images and video in the camera and streams live video, via the FLIR Responder App. See the comparison table.
Which temperatures can each camera measure?
    The K2 measures -4°F to 302°F (-20°C to 150°C) and 32°F to 932°F (0°C to 500°C). The K33 measures -4°F to 302°F (-20°C to 150°C) and 32°F to 1202°F (0°C to 650°C). The K85-N uses a single range solution from -20°C to 650°C (-4°F to 1202°F), with no range switching.
Can they record images or video?
The K2 has no in-camera image storage, and the K33 has no JPEG storage (pulling and holding its trigger freezes the image on screen). The K85-N records Standard JPEG images and MPEG4 video to internal flash memory: 200 files in total, varying with the number of saved video clips.
Which ones can stream live video?
The K85-N, via the FLIR Responder App: an MPEG-4 stream over Wi-Fi. The K2 and K33 do not offer live streaming. The K33 and K85-N both output uncompressed colorized video over USB.
How do the image modes differ?
The K2 has seven imaging modes, Basic firefighting (default), Black-and-white firefighting, Fire, Search-and-rescue, Heat detection, Cold detection and Building analysis mode, changed with free, downloadable FLIR Tools® software. The K33 runs TI Basic on a fixed color scale. The K85-N lists TI Basic, Search, Detection, High Heat and White Hot.
How much heat can each camera take?
    The K2 is rated for 14°F to 131°F (−10°C to 55°C) continuously, 185°F (85°C) for 15 minutes, 302°F (150°C) for 10 minutes and 500°F (260°C) for 3 minutes. The K33 and K85-N are rated for -20°C to 60°C (-4°F to 140°F) continuously, 150°C (302°F) for 15 minutes and 260°C (500°F) for 5 minutes. All three are IP67 and rated for a 2 m (6.6 ft) drop.
How long do the batteries last?
K2: approximately 4 hours at 77°F (25°C) and with typical use, 2.5 h to 90% capacity. K33: >5 hours at 25°C (77°F) ambient temperature and typical use, 2 h to 85% capacity. K85-N: approx. 4 hours @ 25°C (77°F) ambient temperature and typical use, <3 h to capacity enough for 3 h operation. All three ship with two batteries and a battery charger.
Is the K85-N certified to NFPA 1930:2025?
FLIR describes the K85-N as “fully certified to NFPA 1930:2025”, and its specifications list Certifications — Compliance: NFPA 1930:2025.
Is the K85-N the replacement for the FLIR K65?
FLIR lists the K65 as discontinued and recommends the K85-N as its replacement.
What warranty does FLIR offer on these cameras?
FLIR's Fire Service 2-5-10 Global Limited Warranty lists the K2, K33 and K85-N. Under those terms, with registration with FLIR within sixty (60) days of purchase, batteries are warranted for two (2) years, product components (excluding batteries and sensors) for five (5) years and uncooled thermal camera sensors for ten (10) years; otherwise a limited one (1) year warranty applies. Eligibility conditions, including where the camera was purchased, are in the warranty terms (PDF).
