The Cs-137/Ba-137m isotope generator kit is based on the original Union Carbide patented design and is specifically designed for demonstrating the physical properties of radioactive decay. The complete kit includes: (1) Cs-137/Ba-137m Isotope Generator containing 10 µCi of Cs-137, (1) 250 mL bottle of eluting solution, (1) syringe, (5) stainless steel planchets, and operating instructions. Ba-137m is separated from Cs-137 by ‘milking’ the generator using the eluting solution. The generator may be milked many times in quick succession with complete equilibrium reestablishing within 1-2 hours. Cs-137 has a half-life of 30.07 years and decays via beta radiation. Ba-137m has a half-life of 2.55 minutes and decays through isomeric transition emitting a 0.6617 MeV gamma ray. Activities provided will not exceed U.S. NRC Exempt Quantity limits.
